Circulation of sewage sludge to biochar
active 1 year, 1 month agoManagement of nutrient concentrations is a problem throughout the Baltic Sea. The challenges that exist in Åland with circular disposal of sewage sludge applies to the entire industry in Europe. As Åland’s scale i small, the application of the project can also suit other smaller locations that cannot take advantage of large volumes in nutrient recycling. The same challenges apply to agriculture.
Step one. Sampling and analysis of sewage sludge.
Step two. Test batches of sewage sludge are sent to biocoal plants outside Åland. The biochar is then analyzed.
Step three. The biochar is used for various test crops to investigate how good the material is in terms of nutrition and soil improver.
Step four. Analysis of soil and crops and researching possibilities for a finished product.
