Baltic Blue Promenades
active 5 months agoDeveloping Multifunctional Promenades for Stormwater Treatment, Climate Resilience and Marine Biodiversity Enhancement in Baltic Coastal Towns:
The project will deliver two full-scale multifunctional floating promenades that combine stormwater treatment, climate adaptation, and marine biodiversity enhancement in two Baltic coastal towns. The main results will include measurable reductions of nutrients, heavy metals, and suspended solids entering sensitive coastal waters, thereby improving water quality and contributing to the recovery of marine ecosystems. Each facility will be designed to support biological filtration processes, including habitats for mussels and aquatic vegetation, which continuously clean the water.
In addition, the project will develop and validate transferable technical solutions and operational guidelines that demonstrate how urban waterfronts can be transformed into climate-resilient, nature-based infrastructures. Through joint piloting and systematic monitoring, the participating municipalities will build capacity and generate evidence that can inspire replication across the region. The project will also
engage citizens and stakeholders by creating attractive public spaces that raise awareness of sustainable stormwater management and the importance of protecting the Baltic Sea.
