Improving digital accessibility with model for user expertise
active 5 months, 1 week agoWith stricter EU web accessibility legislation, many municipalities and regions report difficulties obtaining needed expertise and prioritising accessibility fixes. We are seeking local and regional authorities to collaborate on addressing this challenge through a model that involves end users with disabilites as user experts.
People with disabilities have lived experience of inaccessible interfaces and how that affects their independence. For public authorities, this is an untapped resource that can help to focus on what actually affects users most.
In a recent Interreg Central Baltic project, we trained persons with disabilities to become user experts in web accessibility and to be able to review local and regional government websites in Sweden and Ă…land. We are now seeking partners to further develop the approach and establish processes where user experts can contribute to accessibility testing and help prioritise improvements based on real user impact.
The core idea of the project is to develop workflows for involving user experts, establish methods for incorporating their feedback, and create sustainable collaboration frameworks. Benefits for local and regional authorities include receiving user expert assessments of their digital services and training for internal staff on digital accessibility. The collaboration will also provide documentation of the model and shared learning from the project experience.
